Als je het over ‘close harmonyzang’ in reggae hebt dan kom je al snel uit bij The Abyssinians. Het legendarische roots reggaetrio vormde zich in 1968 en is bijna 60 jaar later nog lang niet klaar met optreden. Het populairste album van de heren uit Kingston is ‘Satta Masagana’. Het nummer is een ‘anthem’ geworden in de jaren 70 en werd in alle Jamaicaanse kerken, dancehalls en op radiozenders gedraaid. Ook het gelijknamige debuutalbum uit 1976 is een echte klassieker. De Jamaicaanse heren gaan er een mooi reggae feestje van maken. De Abyssinians spelen al een lange tijd samen en hebben inmiddels een uitgebreid repertoire opgebouwd door de jaren heen. Zo zijn onder meer ‘Love comes and goes’ ‘Forward to zion’ ‘Declaration of rights’ en ‘I and I’ enkele voorbeelden van nummers die gelden als klassiekers.

Naast The Abyssinians komt er nog een grootheid deze avond mee en dat is een van de meest legendarische namen in de historie van reggae: Manley Augustus Buchanan, beter bekend onder de naam Big Youth. Deze in 1949 geboren Jamaicaan is een van reggae’s bekendste toasters en begon in de vroege jaren 70 met DJ-en. Big Youth’ muziek is melodieus, relaxed, innovatief en hij is politiek en maatschappelijk geëngageerd.
In de jaren 70’ bracht hij enkele klassiekers in de reggae uit als ‘Screaming Target’ en ‘Isaiah First Prophet of Old’.
