«Ο αντιδραστήρας έμοιαζε να εκπέμπει ένα παράξενο φως. Δεν ήταν πυρκαγιά – έμοιαζε να φωσφορίζει. Ποτέ δεν είχα δει κάτι παρόμοιο – ούτε καν στο σινεμά! Όταν βράδιασε, όλη η πόλη βγήκε στα μπαλκόνια. Όσοι δεν είχαν δικό τους μπαλκόνι, πήγαν στους γείτονες. Οι γονείς έβγαζαν τα παιδιά τους έξω, κι έλεγαν ‘Κοιτάξτε πόσο όμορφα είναι! Να το θυμάσαι όταν μεγαλώσεις!’ Καθόμασταν όλοι μέσα στη μαύρη τέφρα, αναπνέοντας, θαυμάζοντας... δεν είχαμε φανταστεί ποτέ πως ο θάνατος θα μπορούσε να έχει τόσο όμορφη όψη!»

Δέκα χρόνια μετά το πυρηνικό ατύχημα στο Τσέρνομπιλ, η νομπελίστρια συγγραφέας Σβετλάνα Αλεξίεβιτς, επέστρεψε στον τόπο όπου μεγάλωσε και έδωσε φωνή στους ανθρώπους που έζησαν τα γεγονότα σε απόσταση αναπνοής από τον πυρηνικό αντιδραστήρα. Το βιβλίο της, που αποτελείται από μια σειρά μονολόγων, είναι μια καταγραφή της προφορικής ιστορίας των ανθρώπων της Λευκορωσίας, αυτών που στιγματίστηκαν από το γεγονός - εν γνώση ή εν αγνοία τους. Άντρες, γυναίκες, στρατιώτες, ηλικιωμένοι, παιδιά, οι αφηγητές της Αλεξιεβιτς είναι αυτοί που δούλεψαν τους μήνες μετά το ατύχημα στην περιοχή, αυτοί που αναγκάστηκαν να εγκαταλείψουν τα σπίτια τους, τα χωριά τους, τον τόπο τους, αλλά κι αυτοί που επέστρεψαν για να ζήσουν ξανά στην Απαγορευμένη Ζώνη. 
Η σκηνοθέτις Μαρία Κυριάκου διασκευάζει το βιβλίο της Αλεξίεβιτς για τη σκηνή και συνθέτει μια παράσταση για τον έρωτα, την αγάπη και τη βαθιά πίστη. Για την πίστη στις μεγάλες ιδέες, για την αγάπη για τη γη, τη φύση, το χώμα και τον τόπο, αλλά και για τις επινοημένες αλήθειες και τη σύνθλιψή τους. Μια παράσταση για την ανθρώπινη ύπαρξη, για την αίσθηση του ανήκειν και για το τι σημαίνει να αναζητάς νόημα σε έναν κόσμο που δεν σου δίνει κανένα.

«What lingers most in my memory of Chernobyl is life afterwards: the possessions without owners, the landscapes without people. The roads going nowhere, the cables leading nowhere. You find yourself wondering just what this is: the past or the future.
It sometimes felt to me as if I was recording the future».

Ten years after the Chernobyl nuclear accident, Nobel Prize-winning author Svetlana Alexievich returned to the place where she grew up, to give voice to the people who lived through the events at a stone's throw from the nuclear reactor. Her book consists of a series of monologues and is a record of the oral history of the people of Belarus, those who were scarred by the event - knowingly or unknowingly. Men, women, soldiers, elderly, children, Alexievich's narrators are those who worked in the months after the accident in the area, those who were forced to leave their homes, their villages, their land, and those who returned to live again in the Forbidden Zone. 

Cypriot director Maria Kyriakou adapts Alexievich's book for the stage and puts together a performance about love and deep faith. Faith in big ideas, faith in one’s country but also love for the land and nature, love for a specific way of life and what it means to abandon it. Voices from Chernobyl is a performance about human existence, about the sense of belonging and about what it means to search for meaning in a world that gives you none.
