We present the program (o).(o) Look Closer (o).(o) (04/10 – 01/11)
“Look Closer” is a programme about the unstable relationship between looking and watching: what happens when we watch, record, observe or expose another person and how much of ourselves enters the image in the process.
Across five films, looking becomes intimate, intrusive, seductive and dangerous, gradually turning the camera back on the observer, and ultimately on us as viewers.

Michael Haneke’s 2005 film follows Georges and Anne, a bourgeois Parisian couple whose comfortable life is disrupted when anonymous videotapes begin arriving at their home. The recordings show long, static images of their house and are accompanied by disturbing drawings, but offer no explanation of who is watching them or why. As Georges tries to identify the source, the tapes begin to draw him back toward a buried episode from his childhood and toward a history he has spent years refusing to confront.

The film is deeply connected to France’s colonial history, particularly the repression of Algerians in Paris in 1961, but it approaches that history through absence rather than explanation. What has been suppressed returns indirectly, through images, memories, and gestures that refuse to remain buried. In Caché, the attempt to expose an external threat gradually reveals something more uncomfortable: the violence of what has been hidden, and the ease with which a person can construct a version of the past that protects them from guilt. The film asks not only who is watching, but what becomes visible when someone is finally forced to look at what they have chosen not to see.
