Helping Parents Move from Stuck… to Unstuck

Parenting a child who seems “stuck” can leave even the most caring and experienced parent wondering what to do next. A child may struggle with anxiety, school avoidance, emotional regulation, transitions, demands, social situations, or everyday expectations. What looks like defiance, refusal, or a lack of motivation may actually reflect a child whose nervous system is overwhelmed and whose usual problem-solving abilities are temporarily unavailable.

Support for Parents of Children Who Are Stuck is an educational and supportive program designed to help parents look beneath the behavior and ask a different question: What is getting in the way for my child, and how can I respond differently?

We explore approaches informed by Collaborative Problem Solving, neurodiversity-affirming practice, PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance/Persistent Drive for Autonomy), family systems, trauma-informed care, and an understanding of the autonomic nervous system.

Parents will learn practical ways to reduce unnecessary conflict, recognize when a child is becoming overwhelmed, improve communication, negotiate more effectively, and create opportunities for collaboration rather than escalating power struggles.

Just as importantly, we look at the parent’s experience. What happens inside us when our child refuses, withdraws, explodes, or shuts down? How can we remain connected while setting appropriate limits? And what might our own histories contribute to the way we respond?

Sometimes progress begins not by doing more, but by slowing down, becoming curious, and creating enough emotional safety for something different to happen. This idea is also reflected in trauma-informed therapeutic work, where silence and reduced pressure can sometimes allow important internal processing to occur. The goal is not to “fix” the child. It is to help families better understand one another and develop new ways of moving from stuck… to unstuck.
