- **Event Description**: Enjoy a guided walk of this wildlife rich tea plantation with John Walters, a life long naturalist and ecologist!About this EventPhoto: Jo HarperAbout Dartmoor Estate Tea:In 2015, Jo Harper and Kathryn Bennett took the plunge to cultivate a non-native plant on their 13 acre small-holding on the south-facing slopes of the Ashburn Valley. The choice was Camellia Sinensis, the end product, a high quality cup of Devon Estate tea.“We’ve reverted an over-grazed pasture to wildflower meadows. Bluebells and early purple orchids flourish here in late spring. We’ve planted wild cherry trees, nuts and soft fruits – even szechuan pepper – alongside tea. When introducing a non native species it’s important to protect and support the natural ecology and commit to constant monitoring of its impact on the surrounding area. With our native hedges, wild flowers, mixed food sources and habitats we have recorded increased biodiversity levels amongst our soil and plant life and also of reptiles, insects, birds and small mammals.”Find out more. "description": "Local Groups play a vital role within Devon Wildlife Trust and are made up of Devon Wildlife Trust members and volunteers who give their time and energy to complement the Trust's work in their local community.\nFormed to support its work, they help the Trust in a variety of ways and no two Groups are exactly the same. However, they share a common purpose with all volunteers and staff: to support the Trust in its main goal to achieve a Devon rich in wildlife.\nEvery Local Group provides an opportunity for Wildlife Trust members and others to join together to discover, enjoy and better protect wildlife. Many also provide practical help on nature reserves or raise significant funds for conservation work. Some spread the word about wildlife and Devon Wildlife Trust in local parish magazines and newspapers, or at fetes and fundraising events. All of them encourage new people to support us. \nUsually a programme of engaging talks are hosted throughout the winter, however this year talks are moving online to continue to engage, educate and raise awareness."
