About the event

Sala Gathering (Ancestral Skills Gathering)
Sala Gathering

Ancestral Skills Gathering

Sala Gathering takes place on the wild and ancient lands of Dartmoor nestled between old oak and beech woods, and golden gorse painted heathland, where deer roam and beavers build dams. Here we come together in community for a week of crafting on the land with story, song and reciprocity, uniting people from all walks of life through the sharing of common folk traditions and land-based living skills.

We gather together as a healing antidote to an era of disconnection and distraction on a beautiful re-wilding project, sharing food, sleeping beneath the stars, tending the fire and practicing age-old skills and crafts that nourish our human existence.

When: 2nd - 8th July , 2025

Where: Near Moretonhampstead, Dartmoor National Park, Devon. We will be camping and a full list of what to bring will be sent out on registration.

Who is Sala Gathering for?
Anyone and everyone who has a curiosity and love for the wild, ancestral lifeways and land-based crafts with a wish to connect with a nature-based community. We welcome all ages and levels of experience.

What does 'Sala' mean?
'Sala' is the proto-celtic word for 'Moor'.
Proto-Celtic is the reconstruction of the early language spoken in the British Isles and Western Europe, by the ancestors of the Celts from which all Celtic languages later developed.

What to expect:
- five full days of scheduled daily classes taught by experienced teachers. Explore stone, wool, wood, animal, plant fibres and fire and choose from activities such as basketry, flint knapping, bone tool making, meat processing, hide tanning, bow drill masterclass, felting, spinning, foraging wild edibles and weaving.
- Half a day of land tending, practising reciprocity and giving back.
- Evenings around the fire, making music, sharing stories and being together
- Opening and closing rituals, co-created and connecting us to each other, the land and the Ancestors, enabling us to arrive and orientate and leave our collective experience together in a meaningful way.
- A daily facilitated children's activity and a welcoming, village-like atmosphere for children and families
- Shared organic lunch and evening meals, vegetarian option available. Wild meat will be processed together during the gathering.
- A visit from a local storyteller
- A large, private re-wilding project to explore and enjoy; a babbling stream to paddle in, woods to wander and tracks to follow
- Camp roles and responsibilities: participants and staff all working towards the smooth running of the camp, cooking the meals and caring for the spaces
- Camping spaces for tents / tarps / hammocks and car park space for a limited number of live in vehicles (no electric hook ups)
- Compost toilets, sauna, sheltered areas, drinking water
- All materials provided for most classes without extra cost, a small number of classes (e.g. leatherwork with buckskin leather) requiring further investment in materials

What is not included:
- Transport to and from the camp
- Breakfast and snacks
- Camping equipment
- A full children's program, however there will be periods of the day when there is an activity put on for the children. Children are invited to join the main facilitated sessions with their parents or guardians
