The Olde Forde House in Newton Abbot dates back to the 1500s and was the haunt of many famous royals, lords and ladies since the reign of Elizabeth I.
King Charles was in residence at Forde House in 1625, the year of his accession to the throne. In 1646 Sir Thomas Fairfax, accompanied by his lieutenant-general, Oliver Cromwell, stayed at Forde House on their way to capture the nearby town of Dartmouth.
In 1688 that William, Prince of Orange landed at Brixham to lead his army to the capital. Two days after his arrival the Prince reached Newton Abbot and the Forde House.
Prince William stayed at Forde House in the first floor room known ever since as the Orange Room.
The hauntings at the olde ford house are well documented to include a ghostly figure of a lady dressed in white flowing gowns walking the ground floor corridor, children's laughter from the upper floor, slamming doors from empty rooms, objects from the house disappearing only to reappear in a different room.
Hushed conversations coming from empty rooms are frequent day and night.
