- **Event Description**: Newport Public Library is pleased to announce the next “Garden Literacy with LCMGA” program, a quarterly presentation featuring the expertise of the Lincoln County Master Gardener™ Association (LCMGA). The LCMGA works in collaboration with the OSU Extension Service Master Gardener™ Program.

This session is titled “Creepy Crawlers: Friend or Foe?” and takes place on Saturday, April 4 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM in the McEntee Meeting Room of Newport Public Library at 35 NW Nye Street in Newport.

Join Certified OSU Extension Master Gardener Janice Smith for an informative and interactive session learning about "bugs" in your coastal garden – are they pests or are they helpers? So many of the insects and insect-like creatures we encounter in our gardens are beneficial. Learn to know the good bugs from the bad and what to do about them through a holistic approach for minimizing pest damage in the landscape by using knowledge of their biology and their role in the environment with the least effect on humans, the environment and non-target organisms.

Janice Smith is a native Oregonian and a long-time vegetable gardener who has a vast amount of experience in dealing with both pests and beneficial invertebrates.  Janice has been a Certified Master Gardener since 2017 and has a lifelong love of learning. She is especially interested in bugs, finding them constantly fascinating! Loving to eat what she grows and finding that bugs also love to eat what she grows, Janice has learned many strategies in managing these guys, both from the Master Gardener Program and from personal experience. First and foremost is learning to identify these arthropods, their anatomy and habits. Janice is excited to share some of her knowledge, strategies and love for these amazing creatures!
