This April, we welcome Swansea-based folk band Hearthlight to The Phyllis Maud.
James Rees is a Swansea Valley–born musician whose life has been shaped by music, family, and Welsh folk tradition. Taught by his father, poet and writer Lloyd Rees, James began writing songs as a child, moved through blues and rock bands in his teens, and later balanced a career in teaching with performing, songwriting, and deepening his love of Welsh folk music.
Over the years he has played in bands including Final Demand, Moongazer, Rogues Gallery, and various folk projects, while also performing solo. Music became a shared family journey when his daughter Mai Ceridwen, a gifted trumpeter turned singer-songwriter and guitarist, began performing and writing with him before forging her own path.
In 2025, that journey came full circle when James formed a new band, Hearthlight for a Gower festival, bringing together Mai, vocalist Amy Slater, bassist Christopher Price, and drummer Rob Jenkins, and proving that the story is still very much ongoing.
Support on the night comes from singer-songwriter Hari Powell.
