Please join the East Gwillimbury Friends of the Library for our first in-person author event of 2026 as we welcome Toronto novelist, playwright and freelance writer, Christine Estima, who will be speaking about her recently released novel, Letters to Kafka. A sweeping, tragic work of historical fiction, romance and feminist adventure, Christine Estima, skillfully reimagines the real-life relationship between Milena Jesenská and famous writer, Franz Kafka. The story centers on Jesenská’s request to translate one of Kafka’s early stories in 1919, which sparks an intense written correspondence followed by a brief but passionate affair. Estima combines historical fact and skillfully crafted fiction to bring this adventurous tale to life as we follow Jesenská – her intellect, independence, and her struggles between roles of wife, lover, and member of the anti-Nazi resistance during their occupation of Czechoslovakia.
