Inspired by natural forms, you will create expressive sculptural pieces that combine structure, line and surface. We will begin by learning the core techniques used to build the work: creating a fabric-wrapped wire framework that forms the underlying structure of the piece. Onto this framework we will add texture using fine wires through looping, knotting, twisting and simple crochet techniques. Fabric, latex and alcohol inks will also be introduced to create surface variation, colour and subtle patinas. In this three-day workshop you will create at least two sculptural forms inspired by natural structures such as seed heads, shells, pods, skeletal plant forms or marine life. The first piece will be a smaller exploratory form, allowing you to become familiar with the materials and processes. Once confident with the techniques, you will spend time studying natural forms and developing drawings that focus on line, structure and textures. Using these observations as a starting point, you will design and construct a larger, more individual sculptural piece that explores the delicate balance between structure, line and texture.
