 Sinéad Francis-Coan was passionate about community, culture and collective activism. So, when rumours started circulating back in 2018 that Tower Cinemas was closing, she jumped into action, galvanising community support by starting the Save Tower Cinema Newcastle Facebook group and advocating strongly for the cinema’s future!

 Seven years on, just before her work came to fruition, she died sadly and suddenly at 40 leaving a huge hole in Newcastle's community fabric.

 This event, organised by the Newcastle Greens, will honour the incredible woman Sinéad was and the passion she brought to the campaign to save Tower Cinemas. Join us to hear a bit more about the work Sinead did on this campaign, and the other issues she was passionate about.
In 2024 the cinema was bought by Five Star Cinemas owned by the Sourris family, and, with the support of many Novocastrians, including the Andrew Turnbull who had worked at the theatre for many years, the cinema was lovingly refurbished, and is now being enjoyed by the whole Newcastle community.
