Etching Basics

A one day workshop where you will create your own etching prints using zinc plates - for framing or to create greetings cards. Beginners welcome. Most materials provided as well as morning tea.

A great workshop for beginners to get a taste for printmaking - see here what previous participants have created - www.amandadonohue.org/students.

You will prepare your plate, apply a hard ground, transfer your image and then ink and print your etching. We will also explore chine-colle to add colour to the images. This is achieved using delicate paper, such as Japanese paper, placing it on the inked plate and running it through the press to bond the collé paper to the print. By the end of the course everyone should have created a zinc plate with an image and have printed it intaglio ready for framing.

Etching is a rich medium where an image is scratched, drawn or painted onto a metal plate and the image etched into the plate. A range of marks can be created and, after etching, ink is applied to the plate. A print is created by placing dampened paper onto the plate and passing both through a press.
