Last year we experienced both the best and the worst of humanity, as the largest racist riots in decades, if not a century, took place in Britain. Yet it also became an opportunity to draw us closer together; where we witnessed the most vibrant community responses in the North East of England to some of the worst violence.
Join us, in bringing our communities together one year on from the racist and anti-muslim violence that set fire to our streets last summer, as we reflect on our experiences with voices from the frontlines, discuss ‘what has changed?’, and how we resist the prospects of it happening again with the ever increasing escalation currently taking place in other parts of the country.
Come along and:
* Hear first-hand testimonies from people on the ground + guest speakers.
* Learn more about the recent history of far-right and anti-racist movements in the North East.
* View a locally curated exhibition featuring footage and photographs from the frontlines.
* Make connections with the community, reflect and discuss.
* And so much more!
We will be joined by guest speakers including renowned journalist and historian, Taj Ali who was monitoring, reporting on events and coordinating across the country.
Hosted by Indus Legacy.
Indus Legacy is a collective established to ‘Educate, Unite and Empower’ communities; utilising the historical and contemporary narratives of South Asians. Our members have been on the forefront of resistance in our region for over a decade.
The 17th of August is Indus Legacy’s annual day where we host our flagship event of the year, it holds symbolic significance as the final day of South Asian Heritage Month, and also the anniversary of the day the Radcliffe Line of Partition was announced in 1947, we see this as an opportunity to bring our communities together once again in solidarity beyond the dividing lines of borders.
