About this Event

Join us for the launch of the new Race and Migration Interdisciplinary Research Theme (IDRT) at Northumbria University in Newcastle.

The North East has a long history of diversity and global connectivity, which is often overlooked. Drawing on that history, we are committed to working for a hopeful, and inclusive, future for the region. The Race and Migration IDRT will engage with cross-disciplinary scholars, practitioners, individuals and community activists from across the North East and beyond, with guest speakers sharing pioneering and impactful work.

The Launch will draw attention to the challenges experienced by racialised and migrant communities – those who continue to be othered in UK society, particularly in the wake of the 2024 riots and the ongoing rise of the far-right. The event will centre the voices of people most affected by racism, xenophobia, and inequality, and celebrate the different ways in which individuals, academics, communities and organisations work together to tackle these issues.

The event will include short films from the region, guest speakers from academia and grassroots organisations, spoken word poetry, and a decolonial exhibition from the Pat Finucane centre.

Guest speakers include:
Aaron Winter, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Lancaster University;

Ngozi Lyn Cole, North East Anti-Racism Coalition (NEARC)

Vyshakh Thaliyil, Film-maker and PhD researcher at Newcastle University;

Tahmina Ali, Spoken Word Poet based in the North East

with others TBC

The event will be catered. Please let the organisers know about any dietary requirements. Prayer facilities will be available during the event.
