Following on from the success of last year’s public transport weekend away, we are doing another city-based trip away, this time to Newcastle upon Tyne.

The trip will explore some of the industrial heritage of Newcastle and the surrounding areas. The event takes place over the Halloween Weekend (Friday 31st Oct - Sunday 2nd Nov), so we will hopefully be able to include some spooky fun (details to be confirmed ?).

? Walks

All walks are weather dependant and will be confirmed closer to the time. Here are the planned walks for the weekend, subject to the recce:

Friday - Pelaw metro station to the Angel of the North (6.5 miles)

The walk will follow a stretch of the Bowes Railway Path before leaving it around Eighton Banks to head over to the Angel of the North. We will reach the start of the walk by metro and will return to the centre of Newcastle by bus.

Saturday - Beamish open air museum to the Derwent Walk country park (11–12 miles)

The walk will follow the Tyne and Wear Heritage way until we reach the Derwent walk country park. Some highlights on the walk are: Causey Arch (the first single span stone railway bridge), Tanfield heritage railway and the grounds of the Derwent walk country park. We will reach the start and end of the walk by bus.

Sunday - Monkseaton metro station to Tynemouth Priory (10–12 miles)

The walk will head out to Seaton Sluice through a nature reserve and then head south following the Tyne and Wear Heritage way/ King Charles III coastal path past Whitley bay and Cullercoats to Tynemouth Priory. There will hopefully be the option of Fish & Chips at the end! We will reach the start and end of the walk by metro.

? Food and Evening Activities

Arrangements for food and evening activities will be confirmed closer to the weekend.

? Accommodation

The accommodation will be at the Kabannas Hostel (17 Carliol Square, Newcastle), where we have three ensuite dorms (4-6 bed). The rooms will have bunkbeds.

? Travel

Unfortunately there is no parking available at the hostel due to it’s central location. If you do plan to drive, there are paid parking options nearby but you may need to book in advance to guarantee a space.

I’m planning to take the train up to Newcastle Central Station, which is only a 12 minute walk from the hostel. The train journey from is approximately 1hrs 10mins from York to Newcastle.

The accommodation is £70 per person for the 2 nights, Friday to Sunday.

The weekend away is open to Ramblers members and is limited to 16 places.
