This is in an intimate gathering at Tyne Theatre and Opera House's 1867 Café Bar - a space which resonates with Elisabeth's research.Building on previous residencies in Newcastle, Elisabeth explores the city’s theatres and archives to uncover stories of black performers who toured the UK and Europe from the mid‑1800s to the early 20th century.Her research traces a complex cultural landscape shaped by empire, the abolition of slavery and war. A key focus is the troupe of formerly enslaved performers managed by Sam Hague, whose visit to Newcastle featured figures such as James Alan Bland and the elusive Mr. Kool Kennedy, working within - and against - the world of blackface minstrelsy.This work forms part of Elisabeth’s wider investigation into black histories in the North East, including Zuza Ben I Ford, activists Henry 'Box' Brown and Frederick Douglass, and footballer Arthur Wharton.
