Heritage Open Days is England's biggest heritage festival. It celebrates our fantastic history, architecture and culture; offering people the chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences - all of which are free to explore.
Join us in the Great Hall for introductory talks about the history of the House at throughout the day and then explore the House, exhibition rooms and our historic costume exhibition ‘Dressed for Shaw’ and the English Civil War arms and armoury exhibition ‘Dressed for Battle’.
Visitors can also pre-book to visit to the Elizabethan bake house which was discovered during restoration and is one of the very special features of Shaw House. Public access is not usually possible due to its location below the café but during the open days you will have the chance to climb below the ground floor and discover the well preserved elements of the 16th century kitchen.
The bake house viewings must be pre-booked online and spaces will be limited. Access is via a descending fixed ladder (see link below) which has a handrail on both sides. Anyone booking to visit the bake house must be physically capable of completing this manoeuvre as there is no alternative entry/exit.
Bake house viewings: 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm (30 minute duration), free but booking essential.
There is no need to book for the introductory talks or to explore the rest of the House and exhibitions.
Please note that the café service will run as usual on these days and alternative areas for seating will be provided.
