He grew up in Bridge of Allan, studied History at the Universities of Edinburgh and Pennsylvania, and worked in the book trade for several years before becoming a full-time writer.James was the first holder (1993-1995) of the Brownsbank Fellowship at Brownsbank Cottage, former home of Hugh MacDiarmid, and was the first and to date only Writer in Residence for the Scottish Parliament (October 2004).He has published many books, both non-fiction and fiction. His novels include Joseph Knight (2003, recipient of both the Saltire Society and Scottish Arts Council Book of the Year awards), The Testament of Gideon Mack (2006, long-listed for the Man Booker Prize), And the Land Lay Still (2010, Saltire Book of the Year) and News of the Dead (2021, winner of the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction). He is currently writing a short history of Scotland for Yale University Press.In this talk, James Robertson discusses the irony that we live in a multilingual society, yet the learning of modern languages is in steep decline.
