- **Event Description**: Let's celebrate the holidays with a cocktail reception for Stephen Abban Junior's solo exhibition "WOMANHOOD".About this EventWOMANHOODWoman “Hood" is an exploration of concealment and revelation—the unseen narratives of women’s roles in shaping society’s economic, cultural, and environmental fabric. The exhibition examines the hood as both a literal and symbolic covering—one that veils secrets, untold stories, and hidden contributions. Through three distinct bodies of work, Woman “Hood" unveils the unseen labor and wisdom of women, illuminating their influence in spaces often overlooked or understated. The "Bobo" series focuses on women’s role in environmental stewardship, highlighting theirpractice of upcycling discarded household and commodity materials. This body of work speaksabout resourcefulness, and ecological consciousness—a reflection of the ways womenpreserves and protect their surroundings, transforming waste into sustenance. By repurposing materials, these women assert an unspoken authority over sustainability, turning everyday actions into acts of preservation."Wurawura foɔ" shifts the lens to the microeconomic strength of women in Ghana’s rural farming communities, specifically the market women of Beposo. These figures stand as essential pillars in food production and distribution, their labor forming the foundation of local economies. Through this series, the exhibition brings forth their untold narratives—their negotiations, endurance, and sacrifices—that sustain households and drive economic systems forward."Mmɛbusɛm" presents a collection of proverbial wisdom, embodying the metaphorical shapingof character and identity. Just as proverbs mold the moral and cultural core of a community, sotoo do women nurture and refine the inner selves of future generations. These visual narratives weave together the deep-rooted traditions that define womanhood, revealing the unseen guidance that shapes our moral landscape.Woman"Hood" does not simply tell stories; it unveils them. It allows us to peer beneath the veil and acknowledge the intricate and essential roles women play. These works demand areconsideration of visibility, labor, and legacy, asking us to engage with the truths that existbeyond the surface.ABOUT THE ARTISTStephen Abban Junior (b.1992) is a Ghanaian illustrator and a multidisciplinary artist currentlyworking and living in Sekondi-Takoradi and a native of Mankessim, in the Central Region of Ghana.Abban studied visual arts in high school, holds a BTECH in Studio Practice from the TakoradiTechnical University, and was awarded an Erasmus international exchange program by theEuropean Commission in Hungary - Europe to study visual representation (Fine Art) at Eszterhazy Karoly University in Eger- Hungary. He has also exhibited in numerous international Art Exhibitions and Fairs, including the Mauritius International Art Fair (MIAF).ARTIST STATEMENTThe passage of time and the potential for societal amnesia motivates his efforts to bridge the gap between aging and history, reminding us of the importance of cultural preservation.Cultural assimilation and appropriation are significant agents that can affect cultures bothpositively and negatively. Through mythological narratives from African folklores, palm winemusic, and proverbs, he sparks a dialogue between tradition and modernity by introducingtechniques from various visual art forms to redefine Ghanaian oral traditions into visualexpressions. Using mixed media, he blends natural elements such as burlap, soil, and water with ink and acrylic to visually represent his oral culture.Abban’s artistic journey began with a childhood memory challenge that ushered his preservationof stories and lessons told by his parents. He found solace in drawing on the walls of his mother’s bedroom, turning them into a canvas of recollection. He creates visual and psychological sensations that transport viewers to the depths of cultural collective memory. He believes that by delving into our cultural foundations, we can gain a deeperunderstanding of ourselves and our place in the world.
