- **Event Description**: Dr. Leslie Lockett offers a blended discussion on the history, literature, and science of cheese in medieval Europe. How were cheesemaking, cheese consumption, and the cultural significance of cheese different in medieval Europe? Dr. Lockett addresses this question by discussing cheese itself, cheese as a symbol or concept, and replicative experiments in cheesemaking. She addresses written historical evidence relating to cheese production and consumption in an era before artificial refrigeration and microscopes. She also discusses how experimental archaeology is useful for replicating medieval cheesemaking methods and materials as thoroughly as possible, potentially offering a deeper understanding of medieval cheeses. Dr. Lockett specializes in Old English language and literature, medieval Latin, manuscript studies and early medieval intellectual history. She is a professor of English at Ohio State University and the Associate Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. She earned her PhD in Medieval Studies from the University of Notre Dame.
