Free time is available to explore and have lunch before journeying to Bampton, the ‘Village of Downton’ for free time, wander the streets of Downton Abbey village and explore the filming locations.
Although the Downton Abbey story is set in the area around Ripon and Thirsk in Yorkshire, the actual filming location of Downton village is the characterful Oxfordshire village of Bampton, it’s historic charms and period features made it a perfect filming location. The producers were searching for a location that could authentically represent the setting of a century past, somewhere with stone buildings that could be from Yorkshire, and ideally somewhere with two separate centres so the production team wouldn't need to close shops and businesses during filming. The village is split in two, with the shops and businesses along the main road and the historic buildings and quiet streets around the church, which were used for filming. Just a few adjustments needed to be made, like covering a bin with a fake post box and hiding wires and guttering. Downton Abbey's huge popularity now attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Bampton each year in search of filming locations like the church Mary and Matthew got married in, the hospital where Doctor Clarkson worked, Isobel Crawley's house, the village pubs and post office. Leaving Bampton, we re-join the coach and journey to the 4 star hotel, Courtyard by Marriott Oxford South, for dinner, bed & breakfast.
Day 2 Departing the hotel after breakfast, we journey to Highclere Castle for our included visit. Explore the stately rooms where the Crawley family dined, danced, and debated the changing times. Admire the lavish décor and period furnishings that have been preserved for generations, offering a glimpse life of the upper-class. As you approach the majestic Highclere Castle, you'll be greeted by beautiful, imposing architecture and lush surroundings, instantly transporting you to the opulent world of early 20th-century England. Marvel at the castle's interior, from its ornate rooms with priceless artwork to its manicured gardens. The gardens remain a highlight, offering an enchanting backdrop to the drama and romance of Downton Abbey, meticulously maintained and sprawling 1,000-acre estate, they bring lush authenticity to the Edwardian-era setting, from trellised roses to perfectly clipped topiaries, inspiring dreams of timeless elegance and beauty. After our visit, we re-join the coach for our return journey with a comfort break enroute to arrive home early evening.
