- **Event Description**: See how whiteboarding turns science classes into hubs of active learning and collaboration, and leave with a plan to elevate your teaching!About this EventKEY INFORMATIONLOCATION: Marymount School of NY, E97th St. between Lexington and ParkDATE & TIME: Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 9am - 12noonLED BY: Pat Bauer, Jessica Genter, and Erica Walters (bios below)CTLE AVAILABLE: 3THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR: high school science teachers, any disciplineWORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONWant your students to become more actively engaged in the learning process? Want to become more like the “guide on the side” rather than the “sage on the stage”? Want a framework that allows students to engage in scientific argumentation and consensus building?By incorporating whiteboards into your classroom, your students will engage in deep scientific thought around building models, designing explanations, engaging in respectful argumentation, and finding consensus. This quick and easy way to engage students will allow you to create a culture of active learning. The workshop will begin by breaking out by discipline - you’ll choose physics, chemistry, biology or Earth science - to whiteboard a subject-area specific phenomenon. With guidance, you will engage in and discuss ways whiteboards can be used to activate and reinforce student-centered learning in your classroom. You will walk away with skills and strategies to incorporate whiteboarding in your regular practice.A downloadable version of the agenda is available here.WORKSHOP LEADERSPatricia (Pat) Bauer discovered the Modeling approach to teaching chemistry in 2013 through what became STEMteachersNYC, which was transformative for her teaching. Since then, she has worked with inspired and dedicated teachers as both a workshop participant and facilitator which allowed her to grow and understand the art and science of helping students learn. After 35 years of teaching Chemistry (AP, IB, Honors, and College Prep), Physics (College Prep) and Physical Science in both public and private/independent high schools in various parts of the country, Pat is now enjoying retirement and continuing to learn new ways of thinking about education.Jessica Genter is currently working at Friends Seminary, helping students learn College Prep Biology, Advanced Biology, and Environmental Science. She was first introduced to modeling through learning from Pat and fell in love with its ability to engage students in asking questions in class as opposed to expecting answers. Jessica is also an adjunct lecturer at City College, where she helps teachers learn best practices for their classroom.Eric Walters is the Chair of Creative Technology at Marymount School of New York. He was first introduced to modeling by Pat and immediately the value of modeling as a means for students to visually represent the “how” and “why” behind physics concepts and problems in a low-stakes environment. Eric serves as Coordinator of the RSHM Global Campus and he facilitates Marymount’s asynchronous technology courses. Eric is also a course facilitator for the Association of Academic Leaders and, in his free time, writes television sitcoms and dramas.ABOUT STEMteachersNYCSince 2011, has delivered professional development workshops for teachers, by teachers, about teaching.
