On Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 7PM, teens are invited to the Banksy Museum at 277 Canal Street to share their work in a welcoming open mic environment in collaboration with the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and Writopia Lab.Perform poetry, spoken word, songs, or short excerpts from prose in front of a supportive audience surrounded by some of the world’s most iconic street art.This open mic is exclusively for performers ages 13–18, and each piece should be 2 minutes or less so everyone has a chance to share.Whether you’re stepping up to the mic for the first time or already writing regularly, this collaboration will be worth the visit!If you plan to see the exhibit before the event, please arrive 6pm or earlier for the full tour.Sign UpAbout the Nuyorican Poets Cafe:Since 1973, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe has served as a home for groundbreaking works of poetry, spoken word, music, theater and visual arts. As a multicultural and multi-arts institution, the Cafe champions the use of spoken word and written poetry to empower artists of color, immigrant artists and LGBTQIA+ artists. Allen Ginsberg called the Cafe “the most integrated place on the planet”, the Wall Street Journal wrote that the Cafe is “an antidote to gentrification” that has grown “from a small, volunteer-led venue best known for weekly poetry events to a thriving arts center”; and NPR called the Cafe a “wildly diverse venue with socially conscious programming” that “speaks to the marginalized.”About Writopia LabWritopia Lab is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in New York City in April of 2007. We run creative writing workshops and camps for kids and teens. Our mission is to foster joy, literacy, and critical thinking in children and teens from all backgrounds through creative writing. This mission is rooted in our belief that celebrating and sharing stories contributes to the building of stronger, more literate and empathetic young people and societies.
