Schedule 11-12:45 FanVeil Workshop With Alanah Dramatic, mysterious and sensual, fan veils create a gorgeous silhouette of color and light. Alanah's workshop will focus on overall fan veil technique: posture and line quality, turns, fluid motion, rhythmic accents and poses. You will be taught Alanah's fan veil vocabulary developed over years of practice and performance starting with the basics and then proceeding to more complex movements taught through a series of combinations. Open to beginners and professionals alike! 1:15-3:00 Assaya Workshop With Yowalka Join Yowalka for an exciting Assaya Workshop, where we explore the bold, rhythmic, and energetic dance style from Upper Egypt! Traditionally performed by men as a stick dance (Tahtib), Saidi has evolved into a dynamic and playful form embraced by both men and women. In this workshop we'll focus on the Fundamentals: posture, technique and core movements. Stick Technique: How to dance with an Assaya. Alanah’s style is also influenced by her years of Flamenco training, most notably with Juana Amaya in Sevilla, Spain and currently with Nelida Tirado in NYC. Alanah is currently broadening her interest in contemporary Persian dance with Shahrzad Khorsandi. Alanah has danced as a member of the Dalia Carella Dance Collective and with Elena Lentini’s Caravanserai Dance Theater. Alanah has performed at numerous theatrical concerts, private engagements and cultural events highlighting Egyptian and fusion-style Oriental Dance and she has been honored to perform at the United Nations. She is also a producer; creating World Dance fundraisers for Planned Parenthood and Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief. Alanah conducts classes and workshops in oriental dance and fan veil technique and choreography. Yowalka Nawal is a passionate Egyptian-style dance (Raks Sharqui) performer and instructor. Originally from the Dominican Republic, with training under renowned masters like Yousry Sharif, Tito Seif, Atef Farag, Dalia Carella, Raqia Hassan and others. Her teaching includes the YMCA (NYC) and university dance residencies. Formerly of the Arabic ensemble Zikrayat, she has graced prestigious stages like Lincoln Center, Le Poisson Rouge, Alvin Ailey Citigroup, Galapagos Arts Space, La MaMa, Chrysalis (Formerly Ryerson Theater), CUNY Graduate Center, among others.
