About this Event

By registering for this training, you are hereby acknowledging that you have read and agree to the terms stated here: Media Consent and Consent Release Agreement. The Science of Learning with Doug Lemov

“We've learned more about how people learn in the past 25 years than in the previous 2500 years.” --Daniel Willingham

“Learning is defined as an alteration in long-term memory. If nothing has altered in long-term memory nothing has been learned.” --Kirschner, Sweller and Clark

The science of how people learn is growing more rapidly now than at any previous time in history. Yet the process of interpreting that research in cognitive science and other fields and deciding how it should shape classroom decisions for teachers remains a challenge - both because not enough educators are familiar with the core principles of cognitive science and because those principles, once understood, are difficult to apply in the complex environment of the classroom.

In this workshop we’ll study a few key ideas drawing heavily on cognitive load theory and other models of learning and watch videos of how they can be applied practically in the classroom.

DATE AND TIME:

• Friday, November 7, 2025 9:00am – 4:00pm EST

WE WILL ANALYZE:

Through video analysis and discussion, we’ll study how teachers can use an understanding of the “Transient Information Effect” to allow students to encode ideas more successfully in their working memory. We’ll discuss the difference between understanding and learning and how teachers can use memory building tools like Retrieval Practice to ensure that students remember the ideas they study and encode them into long term memory. We’ll discuss how teachers can ensure the right amount of “Deliberate Difficulty” for all students to maximize learning and how certain forms of writing can help support that process. And finally, we’ll reflect on how the limits of working memory affect teachers as well as students, discussing how lesson preparation and design of the classroom environment can support teachers in focusing their conscious thinking where it is most productive during lessons.

YOU WILL EXPERIENCE AND GAIN:

• An understanding of cognitive science that can be applied immediately in the classroom through the analysis of classroom videos and discussion

• An engaging and interactive model for PD delivery based in cognitive science that can be done remotely or in-person back at your campus with video study, discussion, and writing

YOU WILL RECEIVE:

Schools will have the option to purchase the Implementation Toolkit License for an additional $500 per school. The school leader will receive a link to download copies of all workshop materials, as well as additional training materials, including:

• A fully scripted PowerPoint deck used in the workshop

• All video clips shown and talking points for each clip

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

• This workshop is ideal for experienced teachers (2+ years), coaches, Deans of Curriculum and Instruction and other school leaders who might want to bring this content back to their schools to supplement summer or yearly Professional Development

• Teachers and leaders who want to incorporate more research-backed principles into their curriculum and instructions.
