- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 01 Oct, 2026 at 06:00 pm – Thu, 01 Oct, 2026 at 08:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Join us for a panel discussion between Julie Suk, David Bateman, and Zephyr Teachout, moderated by Daniel Schlozman.About this EventTraditionally, anniversaries serve two functions. They allow us to take stock of where we are, and they allow us to celebrate what has been accomplished with the passage of time. The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence comes at a low point in the country’s complex history, which makes the latter feel out of place. Instead, it seemed better to use the opportunity to consider our current condition and think about how to improve it.This panel will ask: 250 years into the American democratic experiment, with all of its limitations and contradictions, how healthy is our democracy in 2026? To what extent is the Constitution still viable, and what possibilities exist for reform?David Bateman is an associate professor in government and public policy at Cornell University. He has written extensively on democratic backsliding, democracy-reinforcing hardball, and ideologies of race and racism, and is the author of Disenfranchising Democracy and, with Ira Katznelson and John Lapinski, Southern Nation.Daniel Schlozman is Joseph and Bertha Bernstein Associate Professor of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University. He is coauthor, with Sam Rosenfeld, of The Hollow Parties: The Many Pasts and Disordered Present of American Party Politics (Princeton, 2024).Julie C. Suk is a professor of law at Fordham University School of Law, where she teaches constitutional law and civil procedure. Her research focuses on constitutional amendment and reform. She is the author of We the Women: The Unstoppable Mothers of the Equal Rights Amendment, After Misogyny: How the Law Fails Women and What to Do about It, and The Shadow Court: Rescuing Democracy from the Supreme Court.Zephyr Teachout is a Law Professor at Fordham Law School, where her research focuses on the intersection of corporate power and democratic freedoms. She has previously taught law and political science at Yale and Harvard and was previously Senior Counsel for Economic Justice in the Office of New York Attorney General Letitia James. Prior to becoming an academic, she was a lawyer, nonprofit executive and advocacy consultant. She serves on the board of CREW, the Nation, and is a Senior Legal Advisor to the American Economic Liberties Project. This is a free event but if you would like to make a contribution to Dissent magazine, please add a donation in check out.
