Nathan, Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science, Columbia UniversityDai Qing has recently completed an unpublished new volume, entitled Notes on Historical Inquiry 《问史笔记》。Her work critically examines, challenges, and revises official Party historiography on a number of important episodes. She asks: “Can history really be determined by armed authorities through official ‘resolutions’?” The work builds on her other ground-breaking efforts to interrogate Party history, including her volume on Wang Shiwei, entitled Wild Lilies: Rectification and Purges in the Chinese Communist Party 1942-1944. During the talk, Dai Qing will offer her perspective on history in a one-Party state and discuss several of the episodes – none of which have yet been released publicly – recounted in Notes on Historical Inquiry.Speaker's Bio: Dai Qing is a veteran Chinese investigative journalist and former Guangming Daily reporter, celebrated as one of the country's most prominent dissenting writers and environmental voices. She was imprisoned in Beijing's Qincheng Pr*son for supporting the 1989 Tiananmen protests and is well-known for Yangtze! Yangtze!, her early and influential critique of China's Three Gorges Dam project. Her work is especially notable because she is a "Second Generation Red" 红二代, having been raised in the household of Ye Jianying, one of China's founding military leaders. Now living in exile in Chiang Mai, Thailand, she has continued her career-long project of reporting as China's first post-Mao historical investigative journalist, working to reveal China's history to itself. Her latest work, Notes on Historical Inquiry, questions the details of key events in Chinese Communist Party history in order to challenge official narratives. This event is hosted by the Weatherhead East Asian Institute.
