Back to The Cutting Room by popular demand -- Mike Fornatale (Losers' Lounge, The Left Banke, Moby Grape, The Monks, The Washington Squares, Albert Bouchard, Mark Lindsay) leads an all-star NYC lineup of musicians through more songs from 1971 than you'll even remember.

Haven't been to one of these yet? We started with 1964 and we do a new one every year. They are very very good shows.

Don't take our word for it. Read all about it here:

http://www.amny.com/entertainment/music/modern-music-mike-fornatale-murderers-row/

"I decided a few years ago that, starting with 1964 -- the year I started loving music again after walking away from it, while still in kindergarten, during the Fabian/Avalon/Rydell era (something I still haven't forgiven Philadelphia for) -- I was going to assemble a group of stalwart musicians and singers every year and do a show consisting of great songs from the corresponding year. We've had a blast doing shows about 1964 all the way through 1970. I'm going to do this every year for as long as I can still stand up. Hey! I can still stand up!"

And that brings us to 1971, doesn't it?

So come see Lauren Agnelli! Russ Alderson! Jim Allen! Emilie Bienne! Rembert Block! Tom Clark! Tommy DeVito! Pam Fleming! Dave Foster! Jeff Hudgins! J.J. Jordan! Stephanie Marie! David Milone! Charly Roth! Tom Shad! Carlton J. Smith! Erica Smith! Lane Steinberg! Tommy Von Voigt! Tony "Z" Zajkowsky! And -- joining us for the first time, not one but two Broadway headliners (we're getting a Class Upgrade) -- Hally McGeahan ("Annie") and Devon Perry (from the Carole King musical "Beautiful!") Hmm -- did any important Carole King LPs come out in 1971...?

Hits! Misses! Things you've never heard! And just some stuff I like!

How many songs? TONS OF 'EM!! Don't worry! You'll be sitting down!

And it's all from 1971...like so many of the best things:

Richard Petty! Beth Bonner! All in the Family! The Congressional Black Caucus! Alan Shepard hits a golf ball on the moon! Veterans Stadium! Richard Wilbur wins the Bollingen Prize for Poetry! National women's suffrage in Switzerland! NASDAQ! Bill White's debut in the Yankees' broadcast booth! The Seabed Arms Control Treaty! Decimal currency in the U.K.! Oh Calcutta! The first Earth Day! Frank McGee! South African Broadcasting Corp. lifts Beatles Ban! "Histoire de Melody Nelson!" William Conrad in "Cannon!" Benny Hill! "Company" and "Sleuth" win Tony Awards! Samuel Lee Gravely Jr.! Cryer and Ford! Amtrak! Godspell! Washington State bans sex discrimination! The Pentagon Papers! The McLaren Park Amphitheater! Play "Misty" For Me! McCabe and Mrs. Miller! The 26th Amendment! The National Women's Political Caucus! The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour! Doh Hahn's inside-the-park home run! The Kennedy Center! The French Connection!

Some not-so-great stuff also happened in 1971, as you might recall -- like Idi Amin, the Manson trial, and the Irish "Troubles" -- but never mind that. This show will be looking at that year's events through a rose-colored bottle of Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill.

This year we're proud to be presenting this show at the lovely Cutting Room again. Because a) we love The Cutting Room, and b) if you really like the music of 1971 all that much, you MIGHT be the kind of person who's old enough to want to sit down while you listen to it. We'll be playing two long sets with no repeats. Bring your own oxygen. The '66 show had '64 songs in it. The '67 show also had 64 songs in it, and we left out a LOT. And so on. Last year, for 1970, we started off with a list of 182 must-have, cannot-possibly-cut-any songs and tearfully shaved it down to 53. It took a month of savage editing just to cut the list down. And the show was STILL longer. This year, the tearful shave-down took a month again, because there were so many songs I just couldn't bear to lose.
