This workshop examines the energy implications of generative AI and costs in relation to electrical grids and water consumption, including recent community-driven efforts to push back on the construction of data centers.
Participants will start trying to calculate the financial costs of AI usage at Columbia, using the ongoing map as a source for investigation. This event also prompts participants to meditate on what social agency could entail in refusing to treat these costs as necessary and inevitable.
Free and open to the public; registration required. Please email c2NpZW5jZWFuZHNvY2lldHkgfCBjb2x1bWJpYSAhIGVkdQ== with any questions.
Hosted by the Center for Science and Society at Columbia University. Supported by the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy at Columbia University.
