The panel will be chaired by Talja Blokland (NYU).How do migrants in Berlin and New York deal with democratic backsliding in relatively liberal cities in increasingly racist national political discourses? How do "ethnicity" and "togetherness" feature in their voting behavior and other forms of political participation? Only days after the elections in Berlin and other states in Germany on September 20th, this event brings together specialists on migration, voting and other forms of political participation. We will look back at the elections, discuss the role of 'the migrant vote' in comparative perspective between New York City and Berlin, and reflect on the structural and institutional conditions of political organizing in these cities.About the Participants: is the Max Weber Chair in German and European Studies at NYU's Center for European and Mediterranean Studies. She is also the Chair in Urban and Regional Sociology at the Institute for Social Sciences at Humboldt University of Berlin in Germany, which she has held since 2009. Blokland specializes in the sociology of neighborhoods and community, urban space and social relations, and urban inequalities. has been Professor of Sociology and Head of School of the Global Studies Programme at the University of Freiburg, Germany since 2015. In the current academic year, she is Theodor-Heuss-Professor of Sociology at the New School for Social Research. Her research focuses on the political economy of global inequalities, gender and citizenship, race and coloniality, unequal Europes, and the Caribbean. is professor for Migration, Diversity and Social Cohesion at Münster University, Germany. Her research interests include social and political inequality, migration, urban studies and mixed methods. In the last years she has worked and published on refugee reception in new and old arrival contexts, internal border regimes, and regional variations in diversity related attitudes. She is currently co-PI of the DeZIM collaborative project „Political (In)Equality in Postmigrant Democracy“ where she examines threats towards politicians in rural areas as well as the effects of infrastructure densities on political participation and attitudes towards migration. She is a member of the editorial collective of sub\urban. zeitschrift für kritische stadtforschung and holds a PhD in Sociology from Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. is Professor in Urban Studies and Senior Researcher at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. From January to December 2026, he is a John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellow at Harvard University. He holds a PhD in Geography (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, 2020) and a PhD in Sociology (Freie Universität Berlin, 2024). Kreichauf’s research and teaching examine how displacement, migration and border governance, housing inequality, and state violence are (re)produced through urban space and racial capitalism, as well as the migrant struggles and solidarities that contest them, with empirical work in European and US cities. recently retired from his position as Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Sociology and Director of the Center for Urban Research at the City University’s Graduate Center. He has authored or edited eighteen books on the comparative analysis of immigration, race, and ethnicity in urban settings in the U.S. and West Europe, including Unsettled Americans, co-edited with Manuel Pastor (Cornell University Press, 2016). His co-authored study Inheriting the City: The Children of Immigrants Come of Age (Russell Sage Foundation 2010) received the Distinguished Book Award of the American Sociological Association. He is completing a book on the impact of the new immigrant electoral constituencies on New York City politics from 2001 to the present.
