HallThe Jean Blackwell Hutson Award and Lecture has been created to amplify the legacy of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture’s Curator and Chief Jean Blackwell Hutson, who served the library and research center from 1948-1980.Hutson’s librarianship, decisive leadership, and vision helped build the Schomburg Center into the institution it is today. The award will recognize librarians and library professionals who have made significant contributions to the well-being of underserved communities through innovative, inclusive, and impactful library services.This year's honoree is Tracie D. Hall, Executive Director, of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Library Alliance and former executive director of the American Library Association, the first Black woman to lead it in its 150-year history.The program will include a musical performance, award presentation by Joy Bivins, Director, Schomburg Center, and conversation with Hall and Dorothy Berry, archivist and author of The House Archives Built and Other Thoughts on Black Archival Possibilities, and a perfomance by Drea d'Nur, music artist, curator, and community worker. This event is free and open to the public, but due to space constraints registration is required. HALLTracie D. Hall was named Executive Director of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Library Alliance in January 2026. Before assuming that role, she was appointed Distinguished Practitioner in Residence and Professor of Practice at the University of Washington Information School in Seattle, where she launched the Black Information Futures Initiative and where she continues to teach. Hall’s career reflects distinguished leadership across libraries, arts administration, and cultural policy. Her previous roles include Executive Director of the American Library Association, where she was the first Black woman to hold that role in the organization's 150-year history; Deputy Commissioner of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events; Director of the Joyce Foundation’s Culture Program; Vice-President for Strategy and Organizational Development at Queens Public Library (NY); and Assistant Dean of Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Her contributions to libraries, the arts, and social advocacy have earned national and international recognition. In 2022, Hall received the National Book Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her enduring influence and excellence in the literary field. In 2023, TIME Magazine named her to the TIME100 list of the world’s most influential people. That same year, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Institute honored her with its Medal for Freedom of Speech and Free Expression, among others.
