- **Event Description**: Observe shorebirds and other wildlife at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, one of NYC's richest ecosystemsAbout this EventMeet at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and search the mudflats and ponds of Jamaica Bay (the NYC locale with the most recorded species of birds) for herons and egrets, Forster's and Common Terns, Clapper Rail, and American Oystercatcher, as well as the many migratory plovers and sandpipers that are headed south from their arctic breeding grounds. Species could include Least, Semipalmated, Western, and White-rumped Sandpipers, plus Greater & Lesser Yellowlegs, Short-billed & Long-billed Dowitchers, Willet (a locally nesting species), and more. Learn the finer points of identifying these challenging species. We might even encounter some uncommon breeding woodland species such as Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Willow Flycatcher, or White-eyed Vireo.Bring binoculars if you have them, plus water, snacks, sunscreen, and shoes you don't mind getting muddy. Walking will be about 1-2 miles, over flat but potentially muddy ground and gravel paths. There can be intense sun and many mosquitoes at Jamaica Bay.

Raised in rural Maine, he followed his love of the wilderness—particularly birds—to Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Vermont and southern Mexico and earned a degree in ecology. In 2003, he found nature in the least likely of places: New York City.\r\nHe’s been here ever since, working with the Prospect Park Audubon Center, New York City Audubon, the Bryant Park Corporation, Wave Hill, Lincoln Center, and other organizations and cultural institutions, helping fellow New Yorkers experience the same incredible thrill of discovering interesting wildlife in the midst of the city. His winter harbor ecology tours were called \"The Best Thing About Winter in NYC\" by Time Out New York , and his self-designed eco-cruises and nature tours have been written up in The New York Times, The New Yorker and New York Magazine, and more. \r\n "
