ITALIA MIA: Music of Renaissance Italy

The viola da gamba arrived in Italy in the late 15th century, and Venice was where it had its greatest flourishing. In this prosperous international setting ruled by cultivated patrons of the arts, an extraordinary synergy arose among composers, musicians, instrument builders, and publishers that led to some of the most beautiful music of the Renaissance. Parthenia Viol Consort with soprano Sherezade Panthaki and lutenist Christopher Morrongiello presents a program of canzonas, dances, madrigals, and motets by composers of the 16th including Verdelot, Arcadelt, Guami and Tromboncino. In this program, the artists use viols and lutes styled on those from the 16th century.

PARTHENIA brings early music into the present with a ravishing sound and a remarkable sense of ensemble. Parthenia is composed of  Beverly Au, Lawrence Lipnik, Rosamund Morley and Lisa Terry, and has been featured in prestigious festivals and series around the world. SHEREZADE PANTHAKI, soprano, has forged ongoing musical collaborations with many of the world’s leading conductors including Nicholas McGegan, Masaaki Suzuki, Martin Haselböck, Stephen Stubbs, and Nicholas Kraemer.  Born and raised in India, Ms. Panthaki holds graduate degrees with top honors from the Yale School of Music and the University of Illinois. Ms. Panthaki is highly sought after as a guest clinician and masterclass leader across the United States. She has taught voice to graduate music students at Yale and currently heads the Vocal program at Mount Holyoke College in Western Massachusetts.

Lutenist CHRISTOPHER MORRONGIELLO, a former British Marshall Scholar, is a graduate of the Mannes College of Music, Royal College of Music, and University of Oxford, where he earned a doctorate in historical musicology. As a recitalist, he has performed to critical acclaim throughout Europe and the United States. Dr. Morrongiello is a professor in music history at Hofstra University and directs the Hofstra Collegium Musicum. He is a founding member of the Venere Lute Quartet, and directs the New York-based Bacheler Consort. 

This event is free and open to the public, but please note that registration does not guarantee a seat. We intentionally overbook our events, and seating is first come, first served. We recommend arriving early.
