Immigrant Stories is a collection of films that illustrate the immigrant experience as it progresses along the generations. Free popcorn will be served, and a discussion will follow the screenings.
In An Autumn's Tale (Mabel Cheung, 1987, 98 minutes) Hong Kong native Jennifer (Cherie Chung) moves to New York City to study for her Master's Degree and to reunite with her boyfriend Vincent (Danny Chan). There she meets her very distant relative Figgy (Chow Yun-Fat at his most charming), a street-smart and wise-talking waiter-by-day and gambler-by-night, who helps her settle into her apartment building in lower Manhattan. When Jennifer discovers that Vincent is being unfaithful, she nearly halts all her plans, but Figgy helps her adapt to her new life in New York City.
Director Mabel Cheung was raised in Hong Kong and studied at NYU, and this movie captures the film traditions of both places, using established Hong Kong stars like Chow Yun-Fat, but also serving as a love letter to immigrant New York.
The film was ranked #49 on the Hong Kong Film Awards' Best 100 Chinese Motion Pictures.
The film is in Cantonese with English subtitles.
