Spanning her life from Cologne and Berlin to New York, the project grew from her search for community while also shaping her understanding of herself as an artist. In each photograph, Poblotzki looks for something of herself in her subject. Through self-portraits, she places her own body and image within the same conversation. She is interested in what it means to choose a creative life, the friction between strength and vulnerability that comes with it, and the relationships that make it possible.The exhibition opening will be held on September 10, from 6 to 8 PM, and include a conversation between the photographer Katharina Poblotzki and the curator Allen Frame. The exhibition will remain on view at Deutsches Haus at NYU through January 8.Curatorial Statement by Allen Frame:The frame is cinematic, almost like a movie still: a mysterious woman steps onto a raised floor in a living room where everything is red—the walls, carpet, velvet sashed curtains and velvet sofas. On a weekend fantasy getaway to Palm Springs, staying in a house lent by a friend’s father, Katharina Poblotzki captures the moment in a self-portrait, 2022.Another self-portrait, made in Los Angeles 12 years earlier, is more plain-spoken: Poblotzki sits pensively on a bed in a cheap Downtown hotel. She has just arrived for an assignment, without a car or assistant, and feels lost. But she makes her way to a musician’s house on Mulholland Drive, and everything begins to fall into place. She recognizes the tropes from movies and starts to feel at home.Next to this image is her portrait of Sofia Coppola, leaning against a wall in Berlin later that year, in 2010, also looking pensive. Placing the rookie and the star side by side makes a point: Poblotzki’s portraits are not about chasing celebrity, but about finding inspiration, identifying with other creators, and making real connections, sometimes lasting only a few minutes, sometimes becoming much more. Her portraits are of people that are “here to stay,” Katharina says, referring to their commitment and determination.Foremost in her mind when making portraits is establishing a personal connection with the subject. Sometimes she gets less than 20 minutes and has to make split-second decisions without seeming harried. She tries to send the stylists and handlers out of the room and be alone with the subject. She remembers being the fifth photographer scheduled to photograph Chan Marshall of Cat Power that day. Marshall’s publicity team was tightly managing the promotional schedule for her new album. As soon as Poblotzki emptied the room of assistants, the temperature changed. It felt intimate. There was an immediate bonding. Marshall was kinetic, constantly moving; Poblotzki kept up with her. In the end, Chan was lying on the floor, as if she were at home hanging out with a close friend, collapsing the machinery of an editorial shoot into something personal.Poblotzki has photographed the artist Kiki Smith twice, the second time for Vogue, when she got to spend a luxurious three days with her, Katharina’s “all-time favorite assignment,” photographing her at her Manhattan home, her foundry, and a printshop. Smith “was unabashedly herself,” Katharina says. “Her hands were constantly moving. She is so fully focused on her work that she isn’t distracted by everything happening around her, someone deeply absorbed in her own practice.”The image chosen for this exhibition comes from their first shoot, which was more natural and less controlled, without hair and makeup people hovering nearby. Like Poblotzki’s Palm Springs self-portrait, Smith is photographed from behind, her face unseen. Instead, we feel the artist’s presence, her attention, her charisma, and the photographer’s awe and pleasure encountering a powerful role model.Jenny Mörtsell was Poblotzki’s first muse and the person she has photographed the most. An illustrator from Sweden, Mörtsell moved to New York a year before Poblotzki; she had already figured out how to cope with the city and showed Katharina the ropes. In those early years they shared a room in Greenpoint and later a studio in Bushwick. Mörtsell now lives again in Stockholm and has three children. The portrait of her from 2017, near their studio, spontaneous and unplanned, is one of many Katharina has made of her through the various stages of their lives while building community and trying to make work.“I gave her almost no direction,” Katharina says, “just put her in a spot with good light, and waited for whatever she was carrying or processing at the time to come through. She has never refused to let me take her picture, and there is a lot of trust in that process. That is also what I am doing through these photographs, processing my own life. Jenny’s willingness to be photographed without performing for the camera has always been a gift. I think I was hoping to be able to borrow some of her independence, ambition, and vulnerability by looking at her through my lens.”About the photographer:German-American photographer creates intimate portraits that look at identity, relationships, and the different ways her subjects see and present themselves. Over the past 20 years, she has photographed artists in Europe and the United States, working across portraiture, fashion, and documentary. Her personal work centers on chosen family and womanhood, photographing the relationships and communities that shape how we see ourselves and each other. Born and raised in Cologne, Germany, Poblotzki studied at the Ostkreuz School of Photography in Berlin, where she later completed the master class of Ute Mahler and Ingo Taubhorn. She has been based in New York since 2013, developing a sustained practice of long-form portraiture alongside her work as an editorial photographer. Her work has been exhibited in Europe and the United States, including at the Kommunale Galerie Berlin, the Saxony-Anhalt Arts Foundation in Halle, Photoszene Festival Cologne, Âme Nue in Hamburg, and the Center for Photography at Woodstock in Kingston, New York. Her editorial portraits have been published in Vogue, The New York Times, Dazed, and ZEIT Magazin.About the curator: is an artist, writer, curator, and educator based in New York, where his work is represented by Gitterman Gallery. In 2026, he co-organized the exhibition Blanche (about the Tennessee Williams character, Blanche Dubois) with Katherine Finkelstein at Motherbox in Brooklyn and curated the exhibition Eros Rising at Clamp Gallery.
