The opening reception begins at 6PM.Drawing from the Schomburg Center's expansive collections in the Art & Artifacts Division and the Photographs & Prints Division, these recent acquisitions acknowledge the importance of Black women artists and advance the Schomburg Center’s ability to represent, preserve, and share more dimensions of Black culture.The exhibition features paintings, textiles, collages, sculpture, photography, and more from 21 artists, including Firelei Baez, Tschabalala Self, Xenobia Bailey, Kimberly M. Becoat, Camille Ann Brewer, Helina Metaferia, Barbara Jones-Hogu, Rosemary Karuga, Afi Nayo, Janet Taylor Pickett, Lynore Routte, Dianne Smith, Lina Iris Viktor, Kandy G. Lopez, and the collective SOUDIO. It also celebrates the purchases made in honor of the Schomburg Center's 100-year celebration: a porcelain bust by the award-winning artist Simone Leigh, and a selection of works by the conceptual photographer Nona Faustine.Forging Ahead is curated by La Tanya S. Our coat check has limited capacity and cannot accommodate oversized items. Any item that could pose a risk to the artwork/artifacts or other visitors may be prohibited at the discretion of our security team. Thank you for helping us protect the collection and maintain a safe environment for everyone.AUDIO/VIDEO RECORDING Programs are photographed and recorded by the Schomburg Center.
