- **Event Start and End Date**: Tue, 14 Apr, 2026 at 06:30 pm – Tue, 14 Apr, 2026 at 09:00 pm (-04:00)
- **Event Description**: Screening of Belly, the second program in New York Stories on Screen guest curated by Alfreda’s Cinema.About this EventIN PERSONThe Black Neo-Noir is the second program in New York Stories on Screen, the fourth season of Black on Screen, guest-curated by Alfreda’s Cinema.Few films capture the aesthetic of 90's Hip-Hop quite like Belly (1998). In this film, the acclaimed music video producer, Hype Williams reimagines the city through a hypnotic, neo-noir lens. A landmark of Hip Hop cinema, its visual language, music, and style remain unmatched—an enduring portrait of ambition, loyalty, and excess. The film moves between Harlem, Queens, and the Caribbean. Cast in Williams's signature blue, it maps the aspirations and contradictions of an era shaped by Hip-Hop’s global reach. With its star-studded cast, featuring Hip-Hop legends like Nas, DMX, and Method Man, the film is a cult-classic and remains a landmark of Black visual culture, where music video aesthetics collide with crime noir and street mythology. Preceded by a screening from the Moving Image and Recorded Sound Division's collection of materials by June "Jushi" Segal, a pillar in 90s avant garde performance and music circles in New York City, this program celebrates the style and image-making practices that color Black visual authorship in New York. The screening will be followed by a talkback moderated by Alfreda's Cinema's founder, Melissa Lyde and Jessica Green.Runtime: 1hr 46 min.FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLICACCESSIBLILITYAccessibility requests can be made by e-mail accessibility@nypl.org.ABOUT BLACK ON SCREENBlack on Screen: A Century of Radical Visual Culture, captures 100 years of local and transnational Black movement work and artistic evolution on film. Sourced from The Schomburg’s collection and others, it takes a kaleidoscopic look at Black life and expression across diasporas, rendering a range of storytelling traditions that incite and inspire Black world-building. The Moving Image and Recorded Sound Division (MIRS, pronounced “meers”) at the Schomburg Center collects and preserves audio and moving image (AMI) materials related to the experiences of people of African descent. The division has amassed nearly 400 collections, approximately 5,000 square feet, in a variety of formats, which captures the gestures and sounds of major historical, artistic and cultural moments and influencers. While the strength is the Black American holdings there is considerable Caribbean and African representation in the collection. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events5/banners/e47461a0-2f69-11f1-bec9-ad3f1e96ac99-rimg-w592-h740-dc30104f-gmir.jpg LEARN MOREThis year, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture continues celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding!
