About the event

Museum Program - "Turpentine and Naval Stores in Florida" with Charlie Cracker
Explore the history of Naval Stores and Turpentine in Florida from the Early Spanish Period through the 1940's and 50's with a focus on the lives of the workers in the scrub and pine after slavery. The job of the Woodsrider was that of supervisor, law man, tally man, scout, and overseer of the Still, and field operations in work camps and remote pine forests. These were places where forced labor and debt peonage were the rule, not the exception. See some of the tools used by the workers and the Woodsrider in their day-to-day lives.
