Discover Lucia Joyce’s story through movement, theatre and film.

Spain’s Karlik Danza Teatro brings Lucia Joyce, a Small Drama in Motion to New Ross for its Irish premiere at the 2026 Eugene O’Neill International Festival of Theatre.

Often remembered simply as the daughter of James Joyce, Lucia was a gifted modern dancer with a creative identity and ambitions of her own. This evocative dance-theatre production looks beyond her famous surname to reveal the woman, the artist and the complex life behind it.

Combining contemporary dance, theatre and multimedia storytelling, the production uses the expressive power of the body, words and images to explore Lucia’s inner and artistic world.

Running for approximately 70 minutes and suitable for ages 14+, the performance will be of particular interest to:
* Transition Year and senior-cycle students
* Dance and drama students
* Teachers and youth arts groups
* Lovers of theatre, dance, literature and Irish cultural history
* Anyone interested in women artists whose stories have been overlooked

A special companion event

Earlier that afternoon, Dr Deirdre Mulrooney will introduce Lucia Joyce as an artist and significant figure in the hidden history of modern dance in 20th-century Ireland. Deirdre has been reclaiming Lucia’s artistic legacy through her RTÉ Lyric FM documentary, short dance film and 2024 publication, Lucia Joyce: Full Capacity.

She will also share her 2026 aerial dance film, The Clouds Are Not Inaccessible, inspired by a little-known surrealist text written by Lucia in 1932. Together with Bess Rowen, Deirdre will explore the fascinating connections and parallels between Lucia Joyce and Eugene O’Neill.
