As long as an infrastructure exists that allows cars to be weaponized against our bodies to profit a hand full of corporations, we have to resist.

We’re tired of being the victims of speed and infrastructure created for cars. We want to see our streets decommodified and made public—with equal access for those with ADA needs, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users. As bicyclists, we are tired of being the victims of an infrastructure that prioritizes the wealth of the oil and auto industries over human life.

A system that has, for decades, convinced the American public through lobbying, commercialization, and subconscious messaging that the automobile must reign supreme in our society. So much so that when someone is killed on a bicycle, we are trained to outright blame the bicyclist for their own death.

We also have to name the history of where the die-in will occur. The Claiborne Avenue overpass was not built by accident—it was planned and forced through Tremé, one of the oldest Black neighborhoods in the country, to serve the interests of the oil and auto industries. In the process, it destroyed a thriving Black-owned business corridor along a park lined with oak trees—hundreds of businesses, cultural spaces, and community institutions erased in the name of “progress.”

So let us gather this Friday and take up space on Claiborne—to mourn, to reflect, and to demand that our infrastructure be made public, and that equality is enacted on our streets for all road users—not just cars.
