Beethoven’s death in 1827 influenced young Mendelssohn as he wrote this piece the same year. Montgomery’s “Voodoo Dolls” was commissioned for a ballet featuring pieces on traditional children’s dolls, and is inspired by West African drumming, chant, and folk music.
