HarrisAbout this EventDEEP LISTENING: A Conversation Exploring the Practice and Philosophy of Pauline Oliveros.      Musician and archivist Lerin Williams will lead a listening session of the album “Deep Listening” (1989) recorded by Pauline Oliveros (accordion), Stuart Dempster (trombone and didgeridoo), and Panaiotis (voice). Experimenting in a cistern fourteen feet underground with a forty-five second reverberation, the Deep Listening band embarked on a landmark endeavor that would contour the trajectory of Oliveros’ sonic mediation and collective improvisation practice. This program includes a discussion with Lerin Williams, composer and producer Lisa E. Harris, and renowned visual artist Ron Bechet. Williams, Harris, and Bechet will introduce and discuss Oliveros’ background, evolutions, and philosophical practices with one or two exercises to ground the listening session. They will discuss the importance of soundscapes, nature, consciousness, and ritual in the context of communal experiences with sound. Audience members are invited to sit on pillows on the floor. If the floor is uncomfortable, chairs will be provided. Please feel free to bring your own pillow and a canned good for the church food pantry.This event is free and open to the public.
