It is the year after the last great incursion of Chaos was beaten back into the frozen wastes. The nations of the Old World are still reeling from the violence and horror that was unleashed, turning inward to lick their wounds and mourn the lost. Great swathes of the frontier of the Empire of Man remain desolate and empty- the population dead or having fled south to safer lands.
Fort Solace is one such place. Its mighty walls are empty but for ghosts and old, cracked bones. But even hollowed out and silent, this citadel remains a tempting prize. It perches over the mouth of the River Reik, and any ship passing into or out of the Empire must sail beneath its watchful eye. On the landward side, it controls the only passes from the shores of the Bay of Swords into the Olde World. Whoever holds Fort Solace will find themselves with a stranglehold on the Northern parts of the Realms of Men.
Even more ominously, the place where the river, land, and sea meet is always a place of great mystical power, and the land Fort Solace sits on is no exception. There is more than mere political power for the taking in these lands.
Armies and warbands gather. Warlords and Nobles call their retainers and march. Horns, drums, and shrieks sound in the deep woods and dark places. War is coming.
Meanwhile, in the village of Dietersdorf, the people are barely aware of the doings of the powerful and mighty. It’s harvest season and Geheimnisnacht! The townspeople focus on their own dramas as they prepare for the harvest festival and Geheimnisnacht masquerade. The Northies and Southies, informal associations of prominent citizens, compete for donations and popularity, striving to outdo each other in hosting the most diverting and lavish events of the season.
