This exhibition honors the legacy of Jim, New London's iconic arts activist who famously saved the Hygienic building from demolition. The display is a faithful recreation of his original creative studio located in the Garde Arts Center.

Following Jim's passing on January 2, 2019, the studio remained untouched until impending theater construction threatened the disposal of its contents. Recognizing the historical value, exhibition coordinators intervened to rescue thousands of eclectic items from a landfill.

The concept for this interactive installation was finalized after coordinators visited a similar Jean-Michel Basquiat studio recreation in Los Angeles. To preserve Jim's beloved collection, all gallery patrons are invited to select an item to take with them "On the Way Out."

Legacy Grant: Donations collected at the exhibit directly fund the Hygienic Filmwerks filmmakers grant program established in Jim's memory.
