While listening to the radio recently, we heard about a “Redneck Regatta” which was a cardboard boat race that was being held in Southern Maine. It immediately caught my attention … a battle of cancer is very similar to trying to float a boat made only of cardboard and duct tape. (This is an actual full size boat that one or more people will float around in the lake 😊)
Cardboard can be folded up – which is what you feel when you hear “you have cancer”
Once you start the journey, the cardboard will open again
Your medical providers, family and caregivers become the “duct tape” that will hold you together
As you head into the “water with your boat” you may need a little push to get you going, you may roll over and need help getting back into your boat, many will be victorious in finishing the race and others will unfortunately, sink like the “titanic” but not without giving it everything they have to try to stay afloat . At the end of the race, ALL are celebrated!!
I immediately KNEW that Bridge to Hope was meant to host the first Cardboard Boat Race in our area. After having MANY conversations and confirming a few things, I called an “emergency board meeting” which I’m sure put the others into a panic thinking “ oh my … what has Kim done now” LOL . After some questions were answered, they all gave me their blessings and we agreed to add the race to our annual fundraising events.
We are happy to announce that the 1st Annual Bridge to Hope Cardboard Boat Race will be held at Nickerson Lake Crescent Park in New Limerick, ME on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025 with Sunday, August 3rd, 2025 for a rain date. This will be open to ages 5 and up. Each participant will construct a “boat” made only from cardboard and duct tape. Colored duct tape may be used to “decorate” the boat. No paint or markers will be allowed in the water. You may use “props” for picture taking and affect but they must be removed before going in the water. A standard canoe/kayak paddle will be allowed. Costumes may also be worn. We are hoping to be able to offer a few classes which would also include a class for all of the warriors … our cancer survivors and those who are currently battling!! We are hopeful to have a “proto type” on display at the walk on October 19, 2024.
We will use the same format as our walk, everyone is welcome and there will be no registration fee. Donations will be accepted and will go towards assisting those from our area who are currently battling any type of cancer.
Our goal is to add a fun filled, family day with an activity that all can participate in and also support those in our area that are battling cancer.
The Nickerson Lake Association will be providing refreshments for all that attend.
