At the conclusion of this conference participants should be able to:1) Identify and describe the potential complications associated with distal radius fracture treatment including stiffness, chronic pain, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), and nerve compressions2) Evaluate the different CMC OA surgical procedures and make an informed decision for treatment based on current literature3) Explain the anatomical and biomechanical factors that contribute to the development of complications following distal radius fractures and CMC OA, including factors related to bone quality, soft tissue injury, and surgical approach, as demonstrated through active participation in debate and case discussionsCourse Directors:Jessica Emberger, OTD, OTR/L, CHTJohn Nolan, MDSara Ogurek, PA-CStatement of Need: Orthopedic hand and wrist surgeons, as well as the team of clinicians involved throughout the patient continuum of care, are now presented with a myriad of new surgical and conservative options that are taken into consideration when providing treatment to patients with musculoskeletal and orthopedic conditions. Due to a gap in knowledge surrounding new innovations within the field of hand and wrist surgery, as well as limited evidence-based outcomes research, caregivers are finding it challenging to make clinical decisions when treating a complex orthopedic patient and developing a plan of care, often evoking peer-to-peer controversy. This educational symposium is designed to challenge clinician’s clinical reasoning and encourage clinicians to consider multiple approaches to create a plan of care that encompasses best practice. It is designed to encourage clinicians to recognize the potential positive and negative impacts posed by the variety of clinical interventions, both in the orthopedic continuum and rehabilitation continuum of care to achieve the best possible outcomes.Target Audience:This program is designed for MDs, PAs, PTs, OTs and ATs. Other members of the healthcare team including NPs, RNs, Fellows, Residents and Medical and Physical Therapy Students are invited to attend.Joint Accreditation Statement: In support of improving patient care, Northwell Health is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Ph*rm*cy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.Credit Designations:Physicians: Northwell Health designates this activity for 5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
