Please join us at the New Haven Lawn Club on Wednesday September 17th, 2025 at 12PM for lunch and Professor Ian Shapiro's talk "Angry Populist Politics: Why it’s happening and what to do about it".
A three-course plated luncheon will be served. Free parking is available at the New Haven Lawn Club, which is handicap and ADA Accessible, and on the Yale Shuttle and CT Transit bus lines.
Ian Shapiro is Sterling Professor of Political Science and Global Affairs at Yale University, where he has taught since 1984 and served as chair of the Political Science Department and as director of the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies. A native of South Africa, he holds a J.D. from Yale Law School and a Ph.D. in political science from Yale. Shapiro is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He has held visiting appointments at institutions including the University of Cape Town, Oxford, Sciences Po in Paris, and Keio University in Tokyo.
Shapiro has written extensively on democracy, justice, and the methods of social inquiry. His recent books include Politics Against Domination (2016), Responsible Parties (2018, with Frances Rosenbluth), The Wolf at the Door (2020, with Michael Graetz), and Uncommon Sense (2024). His current research explores the relationship between democracy and the distribution of income, wealth, and risk. His next book, What Happened to Politics? Paths Not Taken Since the Cold War, will be published in 2026.
