Kate Flora’s fascination with people’s criminal tendencies began in the Maine attorney general’s office. Deadbeat dads, people who hurt their kids, and employers’ discrimination aroused her curiosity about human behavior. Ignoring her agent’s advice to stick to one area, her twenty-seven books published books span many genres including crime fiction, true crime, memoir, nonfiction, and short stories. 

Flora’s been a finalist for the Edgar, Agatha, Anthony, and Derringer awards. She won the Public Safety Writers Association award for nonfiction and twice won the Maine Literary Award for crime fiction. She received a lifetime achievement award from the New England Crime Bake and the Lea Wait Award for contributions to the crime writing community at the Maine Crime Wave. 

Portland, Maine: Detective Joe Burgess ends many nights with a quiet ritual—a visit to the park where the ocean breeze blends with memories of past cases. But tonight, something feels off. When his truck refuses to respond to his steering, and a faint cry drifts through the darkness, instinct takes over.

The interruption of his quiet reflection annoys Burgess, but he's a seasoned detective and knows better than to ignore his instincts. What he finds is every cop's nightmare: a young woman, naked, bruised, and barely alive. Her whispered plea—"Don't let them take me back"—chills Burgess to his core.

As medical help arrives and the investigation begins, Burgess realizes he's not just facing a brutal assault. He's dealing with something darker, something evil that preys on the vulnerable—and isn't done yet.
