More than a singer-songwriter and piano ace, Halifax-based Mat Hughes is a storyteller with rare magnetic charm—making every audience member feel like they’re catching up with an old friend. From dive bars and DIY house shows to touring across Canada and gracing hundreds of stages across Nova Scotia, Mat has quickly emerged as one of the province’s most original voices. Most recently, he celebrated the release of his latest EP with a standout show at The Stage at St. Andrew’s in Halifax.

His third EP, South-Facing Dumpster, pairs foot-tapping, hi-fi pop melodies with wry, metaconscious lyricism—finding humour and heart in everything from hot garbage to existential dread. Beneath the lighthearted surface lies a sharp reflection on how we cope with a chaotic world, blending upbeat hooks with lines that hit straight to the vein.
